Inclusive Sports - Standard Chartered Marathon

About

The Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon is a highly anticipated annual sporting event held every year on the last Sunday of October in Nairobi, Kenya. Organized by Standard Chartered Bank, this premier charity fundraising marathon supports impactful initiatives, including livelihood programs and other community-driven projects across Kenya. As one of the most iconic marathon events in Kenya, the SCB Nairobi Marathon attracts participants from around the globe, promoting health, wellness, and philanthropy while making a positive difference in the lives of many.

Objective

The marathon’s agenda to support diversity and inclusion by increasing the participation of persons with disabilities. APDK and other lead other organization like Sight Savers and Light for the World offered technical support in the special category of persons with disabilities.

Activity

Persons with Disabilities participated in the 21kms Wheelchair race and 42kms Relay race alongside the 42kms Full Marathon, 21kms Half Marathon, 10kms and the 5kms Family Fun Run.

Outcome

Since its first edition in 2003, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has grown tremendously and has earned recognition from World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons nd Distance Races (AIMS). However, one of the major drawbacks to the marathon is lack of r acing wheelchairs to enable more participates compete effectively.
